ACHRONIC SYMBIOSIS
Reality presents itself as an achronic symbiosis: each location exists as we see it; however, if we can see it as it appears today, it is only because the same location was seen yesterday.
Achronic Symbiosis is created using emulsion lift Polaroids on gesso and watercolor paper; it depicts three locations in Città di Castello (PG, Italy), portrayed in the past and present, brought together in a single gaze.
Time superimposes almost indistinguishable layers; the connection between past and present in an achronic embrace is undeniable. The project began with the selection of archival photographs (Fototeca Tifernate); the next step was to photograph the same locations.
Achronic Symbiosis presents changes made simultaneously visible in a work in which time reveals a place that was and that simultaneously is. If this symbiotic achrony is made visible by the use of mixed media, in which layers of time and matter are superimposed onto what is by nature instantaneous, emulsion lift makes it possible.
The use of Polaroids is a perfect fit for this purpose; given the idea of representing city locations as a metaphor for the passage of time, instant photography seemed the most suitable medium. Each pair of photos was carefully studied to match their perspectives.
A digital image was obtained by merging the two photos to recreate architectural continuity; once the support was created, the Polaroids were printed; finally, the images were transferred to the support using emulsion lift. Each panel is made up of 20-26 layers of Polaroids.
